What Is a SoundFont and Why Does It Matter for MIDI?
A MIDI file only tells the engine what notes to play. It does not contain the sound of the instruments themselves.
The role of a SoundFont
A SoundFont is a bank of recorded samples that gives those MIDI notes an actual voice.
A better SoundFont usually means more realistic drums, guitars, pianos, and brass.
That is why the same MIDI file can sound flat on one setup and surprisingly full on another.
